Star in the Night

One highlight in being sick for three days has been the opportunity to pull out all my favorite Christmas DVDs and to get a jump on watching them before the Holidays begin. Holiday Inn, White Christmas, Christmas in Connecticut, A Christmas Story, and The Holiday are my favorites.

What I didn't know was a short film from 1945 also resides on the DVD of Christmas in Connecticut.  It won an Oscar in 1946 for best Short Film.  Why have I never heard of it??

Now there is another title on the list of favorites, Star in the Night.

Hot Toddy vs. Hot Buttered Rum I"m feeling much better today, thank you. But for the past three days I've felt under the weather and haven't left the house, changed out of my jammies, or consumed anything beyond hot tea and tiny little Vitamin C -packed citrus fruits. Celery Souffle In my Christmas Movie Marathon waiting out the Cold Virus running its course, I watched Christmas in Connecticut (1945) with Barbara Stanwyck. It's a favorite and a classic! During WWII, Jeffersonson Jones and a fellow sailor float in a liferaft for 18 days after his ship has been torpedoed. While waiting to be rescued Jones dreams about steak and baked potatoes, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, chocolate cake and ice cream. However, the doctors at the Naval hospital have a different idea about the nurishment needed for the shipwrecked survivor: a bowl of milk with a raw egg floating in the center—even though his shipmate dines on steak and chicken Maryland. Still dreaming of that special meal, Jones comes across the menu of the month by Elizabeth Lane, “America’s Best Cook,” in Smart Housekeeping magazine: a Christmas dinner featuring roast goose, bernoise, walnut dressing and giblet gravy, cranberry-orange relish, buttered green...
